We The Reef

Discover why saving our reefs and oceans is so vital to our planet and life.

NO REEF | NO OCEAN | NO AIR

Coral Reefs Are The Rainforest Of The Sea

Coral reefs are the foundation of a healthy ocean, and marine biodiversity as a whole allows the ocean to produce more than half of the oxygen we breathe. 50% of the world's coral reefs have been lost and we have until 2050 to save what remains. Corals have shown remarkable resilience through major climate events and sea level changes, giving hope for their continued survival.

LIVELIHOOD | PROTECTION | MEDICINE

Why Care About Coral Reefs

1 Billion people around the world directly rely on coral reefs for food, tourism, income and livelihoods. Healthy coral reefs absorb up to 97% of the ocean's energy, which protects the shore from incoming storms, currents and waves. Coral reefs are an important source for innovative medicine to treat a variety of diseases. Coral reefs exceed tropical rainforests in their biodiversity and are home to more than 25% of all marine life.

ANIMAL | PLANT | MINERAL

What Is A Coral

Corals are made up of thousands of tiny living animals called polyps. Polyps have algae living inside their tissue that provide the coral with energy, while receiving a safe home. Polyps turn seawater into calcium carbonate to build their hard skeleton and eventually form entire reefs.

REEF RESTORATION | AWARENESS | INNOVATION

Revolutionising Ocean Conservation And Creating A Global Movement To Save The Reef

Coral Gardeners grow and plant resistant corals to restore reefs' abundance and biodiversity. They raise awareness and tell the story of the reef to inspire people to take action. They develop tools to create immersive experiences and collect data to improve reef restoration.

COLLECT | GROW | PLANT

How does Coral Gardeners Restore The Reef

Fragments of resistant corals are collected in the wild. The fragments grow on ropes, cookies or trees for at least a year. Once matured, the corals are planted back onto the reef.

WE THE REEF | IN SUPPORT OF CORAL GARDENERS

We The Reef Program

Through the We The Reef program, we support Coral Gardeners' mission and 2025 goals to plant 1 million corals, open 20 new locations worldwide, reach 1 Billion people and scale up by developing new innovative tools.
